When to Start Packing for a Move (And What to Do If You’re Already Late)

At some point before a move, this thought usually hits:

“Should I have started packing by now?”

Sometimes it comes weeks in advance.
Sometimes it comes three days before the van arrives, while you’re standing in the kitchen, surrounded by cupboards you haven’t opened in years. Been there, done that – and once forgot to pack our tea and coffee cupboard.

If you’re asking when to start packing for a move, you’re not behind — you’re just trying to get your bearings in the middle of a big change.

This guide isn’t about doing everything perfectly or calmly. It’s about giving you a realistic timeline, and helping you make good decisions even if you’re already short on time.

The ideal world answer (that rarely applies)

If life were quiet and predictable, this is what most moving timelines suggest:

  • 6–8 weeks before: start sorting, decluttering, and packing non-essentials
  • 4 weeks before: pack seasonal items, books, decor, spare rooms
  • 2 weeks before: pack most of the house
  • Last few days: essentials only

That’s fine in theory.

But most people aren’t moving during a calm, spacious season of life. They’re moving while working, parenting, dealing with health issues, or juggling a hundred other things at the same time.

So if that timeline already feels unrealistic, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

What usually happens instead

In real life, packing often starts:

  • later than planned
  • in short bursts
  • under pressure

Many people don’t seriously start packing until one to two weeks before the move. Some leave it even later. I like to start three days before the move, max.

That doesn’t mean the move is doomed. It just means the strategy needs to change.

Instead of asking, “When should you start packing for a move?”
A more useful question is: “What matters most now?”

If you’re already late, focus on this

If you’re inside the last two weeks — or even the last few days — don’t try to catch up on an ideal timeline. It will only drain you.

Instead, prioritise in this order:

Non-essentials first

Anything you can live without for a few days or weeks:

    • decor
    • books
    • rarely used kitchen items
    • spare bedding
    • seasonal clothes

    Decision-heavy areas early

Spaces that slow you down because there’s a lot to think about:

      • paperwork
      • storage cupboards
      • “random” drawers Packing these early reduces mental noise later.

Leave daily life items until last

Don’t box yourself into a miserable final week by packing:

        • everyday clothes
        • basic kitchen items
        • toiletries

You’re allowed to keep life functioning while you pack. You don’t get extra points for suffering.

What not to pack too early

Packing early sounds sensible, but packing the wrong things too soon can make life harder.

        Try not to pack:

        • the clothes you actually wear each day
        • basic cooking equipment
        • chargers, medication, paperwork you still need
        • kids’ comfort items

If packing something means you’ll immediately have to unpack it again, it’s probably too soon.

        A simple rule of thumb

If you want one guideline to hold onto, use this:

Start packing as soon as it helps you feel calmer — not sooner.

For some people, that’s weeks in advance.
For others, it’s when there’s no other option.

You don’t need to prove you’re organised by packing early. Instead of creating new problems for yourself by boxing up things you still need, focus on reducing future stress.

If you need a starting point today

If you’re stuck and don’t know where to begin, start here:

        • pack one box of non-essential items
        • label it clearly
        • put it somewhere out of the way

        That’s it.

You don’t need to “start properly”. You just need to start somewhere.

A final note on when to start packing for a move

Wondering when to start packing for a move usually means you care about doing things well — even when life is messy.

        The ideal moment was yesterday.
The next ideal one is right now.

        Start from there.
